What is Uninsured Motorist Insurance, why do I need it?

UM is a coverage that protects you if you’re involved in an accident with someone who does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance to pay you for your damages. Keep in mind that our state’s minimum requirement is only $15,000.00. Your medical bills alone could easily exceed $15,000.00.

If a driver seriously injures you or a family member do you feel that $15,000.00 is enough to compensate you for medical bill liens, lost wages, pain and suffering, and future medical expenses?

We strongly recommend that everyone add Uninsured Motorist Insurance (“UM”) to their automobile insurance policies.

UM is optional coverage and agents often try to get their clients to waive this coverage. We recommend that you do not sign the waiver. The cost of UM coverage is relatively minimal and YOUR RATES WILL NOT INCREASE IF YOU MAKE A CLAIM.

What type of UM do I need?

Generally there are 4 types of UM coverage:

  • Uninsured Motorist Insurance (UM or UMBI)
    Covers medical bills.
  • Underinsured Motorist Insurance (UIM)
Covers medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
  • Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Insurance (UMPD)
    Covers property damages only.
  • Uninsured Motorist Economic Only (UMEO or UME)
    Covers lost wages only.

All 4 types are beneficial, but it is most important for you to carry UMBI, UIM, and UMPD.

Important to Note:

  • “Full coverage” does not automatically include UM. You must elect to receive this coverage. You can elect to have coverage equal to or less than your liability limits.
  • This is insurance to protect YOU. Liability coverage protects the other party should you cause an accident.
  • Your rates WILL NOT increase should you need to utilize your UM coverage. If you are using this coverage you did not cause the accident.
